About the Urban Garden Initiative

Picture
The Problem
Urban areas are centers for energy consumption and a key source of greenhouse gasses. Cities account for between 60 and 80 percent of the world’s energy consumption and generate as much as 70 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. Cities are also prone to an increased number of climate events, food sustainability issues, and much more.

What We Do
TUGI's mission is to inspire and empower youth to achieve urban sustainability though a gardening-based educational program. In order to achieve these goals, we have designed a year-long program that engages youth in environmental education as well as urban gardening in both the fall and the spring time.

Our Process

Picture
Reaching Schools
We begin by working with schools and community centers in the late summer in order to integrate our adaptable curriculum and program in the best way possible.
Picture
Fall Workshop
The program begins in early fall through a ~1 hour workshop that will be divided into an educational portion as well as a hands-on gardening portion.

Spring Workshop
We will then come back in the early spring to help start a spring garden at the school. All resources and educational tools will be provided through TUGI.
